5 Reasons Your Tape in Hair Extensions Are Slipping

If you’re a client new to tape in hair extensions, slipping may be a top concern for you. However, it’s important to understand the reasons behind how and why hair extensions can slip.

High-quality tape in extensions are usually made with a medical-grade adhesive that will adhere to the hair for about 4-6 weeks.

If you do experience any slipping, the top two reasons may be stylist error or incorrect product usage.

Below you will find the top 5 reasons why your tape-in extensions is slipping after initial application.

1. Hair was not clarified.

Before application, hair must be clarified with the brand-specific clarifying shampoo or other recommended shampoo. The hair must be thoroughly clean before application. Otherwise, any oil will prevent the adhesive from adhering to the hair.

2. Do not wet the hair for 24-48 hours

After application, the client must wait for the recommended 24-48 hours before showering or excessively sweating. The bond needs adequate time to adhere to the hair and if this is interrupted the panels may slip.

3. Panels not aligned correctly

During application, the stylist must make sure the panels are lined up perfectly. Otherwise, they may slide around. Only have your tape-in extensions applied by a licensed cosmetologist who is trained in this method. Otherwise, you may be putting yourself at risk for damaging your hair or slipping extensions.

4. Too much hair between the panels

If you have thin hair, the stylist must use enough hair in between the panels and with thick hair, less. If there is too much or too little hair, the sandwiched panels will be unable to adhere together.

5. Client is not using recommended products

Having tape in extensions requires extra maintenance and care. It’s important for the client to understand which products are recommended, otherwise slipping or other issues may arise. The client should shampoo with a sulfate-free shampoo or brand recommended shampoo. If you use a shampoo that is not recommended such as any that contains moisturizing products, the bond will eventually break down and no longer hold. Never condition the hair or apply oils or serums near the base of the panels. Now, let's move onto the HAIR Quality for your hair extensions.
