‘Steel Hair’ Is the Perfect Winter Shade For Blondes

Bleach blonde hair looks epic, but there’s no denying how high-maintenance it can be, especially during winter when hair can feel extra dry and damaged.

Besides that, the colder season ushers in a change of mood, and an opportunity to mix things up stylewise. We want teddy coats, chunky boots, and a different vibe for our hair—and Jack Hirst, senior colorist at Salon64, has just the thing. He’s heralding steel blonde hair as the perfect transitional hue for blondes this season.

“My clients all love going bright blonde for the summer, but as soon as autumn hits, they no longer want to walk around with golden beachy locks,” he said. “Taking my clients brunette would be a huge step backwards to then want to create a nice clean blonde again—especially after the time and investment to lift their hair light in the first place.”

Steel hair is, therefore, the perfect option for blondes because it’s created using mainly toners on top of blonde hair, which means blondes can revert to a lighter shade with ease for spring and summer.

“An eye-catching look that works perfectly with the autumn color palette, I highly recommend this look for anyone wanting to add a splash of interest to their hair this October,” says Hirst, who also believes it perfectly complements autumn beauty looks, too.

“The color is great for autumn clothes and colors, plus it works well against darker lipsticks or smoky eyes. This color gives sun-damaged hair a new lease of life and depth, and it works great with a root as well because the color just blends in with the root.”

And Hirst’s not the only one who’s seriously feeling cooler colors this autumn. Adam Reed, U.K. editorial ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel, has seen a surge from clients asking for an ashier tone to their hair. “Ashy tones help add some dimension to a natural base, especially on blonde hair. A look I’ve coined is the big smoke blonde—smoky and ashy blondes that are a mix of beautiful golden blonde, with smoky, ashy tones and sandy tonal highlights for a stunning greige finish. It’s a gorgeous low-maintenance look for this season,” says Reed.

If you're keen to jump on board, take your strands to the next level by upping your at-home hair care using celebrity-favoured Olaplex to hydrate and repair, as well as using a moisturizing purple shampoo to maintain color in between toners. That way you'll get an even glossier outcome.
