10 Shades of Red Hair to Inspire Your Next Appointment

These are fire!

Full disclosure: Drop-dead gorgeous shades of red hair may just be the most lusted-after hair color among team Byrdie. It's not our fault—blame the fact it's high maintenance and hard to pull off, making it oh so coveted. From auburn to strawberry blonde to magenta, it’s impossible to choose our favorite (don’t make us), and though we may never be brave enough to dye our own strands—or would we?—we’ll gladly take each and every opportunity to gaze at the hair-blessed celebrities with the au naturel or faux-red shades of our dreams.

It wasn’t easy, but we managed to narrow down 10 of our favorite shades of red hair. Keep reading for the full spectrum of looks.

Rose Gold

Back in 2013, Sienna Miller traded in her light blonde tresses for a sultry shade of rose-gold red hair. (That sound you hear is us swooning.) If you already have a light base and are nervous to take the plunge toward full-on crimson, we highly suggest this flattering hue.

Strawberry Blonde

We've already done a standalone spotlight for this sparkling shade, but clearly, we just can't get enough. Actress Katherine McNamara hits the ultimate sweet spot—not too blonde, not too red, but just right.

Gilded Copper

In case you missed it, Emma Roberts’s coveted copper hue is going to be one of the most in-demand shades of hair this winter. We’ve been infatuated with it for a while now, and this specific shade of red hair may be just what the doctor ordered for our next color appointment.

Royal Rust

When asked if she’d ever change up her glossy, virgin-red strands, actress Madelaine Petsch gave it to us straight-up: no chance. Truth be told, we may have breathed a sigh of relief. To keep her natural shade in tip-top shape, she relies on masks—lots of them—and frequent snips at the salon.

Smoky Scarlet

We adore Rihanna any which way you slice it but have a special place in our hearts for every shade of red she’s ever debuted—and this scarlet number from 2011 is no exception. Accented by a bold red lip and sunset-dusted eyes, it’s a 10/10.

Burnished Ruby

HoYeon Jung just may have one of the most iconic hair colors in the modeling world right now: a brilliant, burnished shade of ruby. We can’t stop staring.

Cranberry Red

Remember that time actress Lily Collins dyed her hair red and immediately took our breath away? Us, too. Though she has since gone back to her signature shade of brunette, we will never forget this gorgeous shade of cranberry red from 2016.

Mulled Magenta

We’re not sure what we love more: Keke Palmer’s amazing box braids or that stunning shade of magenta-red hair. We’ll call it a draw while bookmarking her hue for future color inspiration.

Streaks of Burgundy

Though she’s also gone magenta, we love actress Kerry Washington’s take on the burgundy trend as seen here circa 2013. Timid about going all the way red? Dip your toe into the trend with streaks à la Washington instead.

Auburn

If you’re looking to add some oomph to your signature brunette base, do like actress Sarah Hyland did and opt for a rich hint of crimson. It’s just one (of many) shades of dark red hair we’re loving this season.
