More than just lobs.

Medium-length hairstyles are often the result of growing out a short haircut. While there’s nothing wrong with a good grow-out from a cropped pixie or micro bob, a shoulder-grazing haircut has a on of appeal beyond a grow-out phase. A mid-length style highlights your best features—cheekbones, jawline, collarbone, décolletage, you get the picture. They also have lots of range, including both classic cuts and trendy styles.
Shoulder-length bobs, for example never go out of style, while shags are making a comeback with Hollywood’s cool crowd. There’s never been a better time to lean into a shoulder-length hairstyles, so we tapped three stylists to pinpoint the best cuts to try this season.

Blunt bob
A shoulder-grazing blunt bob never fails to create a chic look. “It’s a power cut—sophisticated, polished, and designed to exude confidence and sophistication,” says hairstylist Emma McJury. To get the full effect, she recommends pairing the cut with a deep side or middle part.

Side part lob
Soft layers are ideal for creating natural-looking waves. To achieve this stylish long bob, Michelle Hong, hairstylist and the owner of NYC The Team, recommends cutting the longest layer just below the collarbone and asking for soft layers throughout. A slight side part is the finishing touch that adds to the natural look.

Textured midi-cut
This cut is perfect for anyone who wants a little more volume and effortless styling. “It features light layering throughout to enhance natural texture, making it perfect for air-drying or easy waves, and works well for those with wavy or slightly curly hair,” says LA-based hairstylist Beau Dieda.

Collarbone cut
This sleek bob bridges the gap between a short French bob and a longer style. Instead of being cropped or landing on the shoulder, it’s cut just above to lightly graze the collarbone. The result is a clean haircut that needs little to no styling to maintain.

Classic shag
If you’re looking for a bold haircut to kick off the season, you can’t go wrong with a classic shag. “The modern shag is a great choice for adding volume and shape, especially for fine hair,” notes Dieda. Go with choppy layers, a fringe and tousled styling for a look that’s anything but boring.

6 / 7
Effortless bob
An effortless bob, like a cowgirl bob, is one of the easiest cuts to maintain. According to Hong, its length is the main reason why. “Cut to the shoulder, this look has subtle layers that add movement and make it look slightly undone,” she says. The key is embracing your natural texture and using it to create subtle waves.
