8 Instagram Perfect Hair Color Trends, Bali Influencers Love Them!

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

These shades will go perfectly with your PSL.

If you’re warm weather-obsessed like me, then you likely need something other than the promise of a pumpkin spice latte to get you pumped up for the chilly temperatures fall is sure to bring. And what better way to do that than to update your tresses with one of fall 2022's trending hair colors? Because, let’s be honest, there are few feelings that compete with the euphoria you experience when leaving the salon with a fresh, new color.

Before you book that salon appointment though, you’re going to need a color plan, and while nature is a great first place to look for hair color inspiration, there are plenty of other, more qualified, sources out there that can help point us in the right direction for the colors that'll be trending this fall. For instance, we consulted four expert colorists to find out what colors their clients have been asking for this fall and how to achieve said looks.

One thing is for certain, says Shvonne Perkins, lead colorist at Madison Reed, “the red trend is here to stay.”

Ready to hit the salon? Scroll on to find the perfect inspo to take along…

1. Rich Brunette

On the fence about going back to your brunette roots? Michelle Schindler, stylist and founder of Seven & Satin Salon says to ask for “rich brunette.” According to Schnidler, this color takes the au naturale trend up a notch by giving “the illusion of natural color, which is created by playing off of the natural tone and adding some dimensional enhancements.” Don’t be fooled though: while the color may appear to be one-toned, it’s not.

“It reveals a slight shift of the natural color, giving the hair a more sun kissed, lived in look, while still reading brunette,” says Schindler.

2. "Curl"-Lights

This one is a form of balayage, which means the highlights will not go all the way to the roots and will mostly focus on the mid-lengths to ends. “

It is a great way to play with color, texture and tone,” explains Schindler. “I like to do teased highlights throughout the whole head and really saturate each foil with lightener. I always go heavier with my foiling in the front of the head because the surface layer of the hair is more exposed to the sun, and taper off the foils and intensity of the color towards the back of the head and the under layer that is less exposed to the sun."

3. Copper Curls

Speaking of curls, Kim says there has been a big, and well deserved resurgence of natural curls over the last couple of years. “A major curl color trend will be bright and bold copper," she says. "The effortlessly sexy nature of natural curls match perfectly with these warm and striking red colors.”

4. Warm Red-Brown

If copper feels a bit too daring but you still want to dip your toes into the redder tones, consider asking your colorist to try a warm red-brown. According to Irinel De Leon, hairstylist and global ambassador for Dyson, warm-red brown is the perfect transition into the new season. "It’s a more toned-down version of the coppery trend,” she says.

5. Toasted Caramel

Not ready to give up the blonde you’ve been rocking all summer, but want a slight change in tonality? Opt for some gold tones instead of icy cool blonde!

"By adding gold to the formula, it will richen the color and add more depth,” says Schindler, who adds that this is a great way to start transitioning into a little darker, richer color. "The great thing with this color, is that it can be created by doing a full head of baby lights, playing off of existing color placement, or enhancing the color with a money piece and pops of color on the ends," she says.

6. Dimensional Low-Maintenance Highlight

If you aren't looking to do a total overhaul, and also want to keep your upkeep minimal, consider asking your stylist for a dimensional low-maintenance highlight. Kim says this allows you to have a darker root that will prolong the regrowth.

“Overall, colorists are using the highlighted canvas from summer to create a slightly deeper tone for fall," she explains. "This is also the healthier option for all hair types: the less processing on the hair, the better.”

7. Auburn Spice

Looking for that apple-picking, fall-girl aesthetic? Consider trying out this PSL-inspired color. “Adding warm tones into the hair is one of my favorite ways to transition my summer blondes into a fall auburn spice," says Schindler. "If the [existing] color placement still looks good, play with the idea of a warm color melt."

Schindler likes to start with a rich auburn color on the roots, which she then melts down to a golden copper. "This is a great way to show clients versatility with hair color,” she says.

8. Cherry-Cola

While Perkins insists that sweet strawberry blonde and copper shades are not going away any time soon, she expects to see an insurgence of vibrant violet and red hues in dark red brunettes, “creating a cherry-cola look with mahogany tones that sit between red and violet.”

One way to try this trend, Perkins explains, is to add a pop of red over brunette hair with a temporary mask like the Madison Reed Color Therapy Mask in Rubino. "You’ll see the depth of the brunette stay the same, but the red sheen shines through in the light,” she says.
