Celebrity Braided Hairstyles Too Damn Good Not to Copy

There’s something about festival season and braids that just go hand in hand. Roll up to an outdoor concert awash in glitter and destroyed denim and you’re bound to bump into a sea of plaited beauties. French, boxer, Dutch, crown, you name a braid style and there’s a classic and avant-garde way to do it. These A-listers just happen to be sporting our favorite plaits of the moment, so take a cue from them (and the pros that help them pull off these ‘dos) the next time you’re in the mood to weave with your fingers. Or, just look cool AF.

Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown slayed the Golden Globes this year with her braided undo. But for all you fine-haired gals out there wanting to recreate her look, celeb stylist and Fatboy founder Tyson Kennedy suggests adding more hold by applying a wax to your fingertips before braiding. Try Fatboy Tough Guy Water Wax ($21), and use it to smooth any flyaways post plaiting as well. (Photo via Kevork Djansezian/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty)

Margot Robbie

To achieve an undone style like Margot Robbie’s, Kennedy recommends working with your hair’s natural texture. “And if you need a volume boost, spritz a texturizing spray like Cutler Volumizing Spray ($24) all over,” he says. (Photo via John Phillips/UK Press via Getty)

Beyoncé

“For a slick look without the flakes and crunch, reach for a product that has a shiny finish and a flexible hold so the braid won’t come undone,” advises Kennedy. But just be sure to apply the product root to mid-shaft beforebraiding, not after. (Photo via John Lamparski/WireImage)

Sarah Hyland

A low bun is always effortlessly chic, but add a fishtail braid element to it and bam — next-level glam. To channel Sarah Hyland’s ‘do, celebrity stylist Ryan Richman suggests working Suave Professionals Natural Volume Mousse ($4) through damp hair focusing on the ends (where the hair is driest), then blow drying with a side part until smooth and pulling it back into a low ponytail. Once you’ve mastered the easy stuff, split the pony into two equal parts and create fishtail braids, before using hair pins to secure the bun. (Photo via Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic)

Julianne Hough

When it comes to channeling the queen of braids, Julianne Hough, you need to know how to prep. “I love to shampoo the hair with IGK 1995 ($25) because it has a clay-like grunge effect and then use Kerastasé Materialiste Thickening Spray Gel ($28) instead of conditioning for messy texture,” says stylist and Kerastasé brand ambassador, Matt Fugate. Also, don’t be afraid to deconstruct your braid. Jules loves to rock all different styles, but Fugate’s pick for the It braid right now is the broken crown. “It’s more of an asymmetric crown… one that looks like it’s broken and falling off the side of your head,” he says. Riley Keough

According to Valerie Star of Caravan Stylist Studio, anyone can attempt Riley Keough’s pigtail braids because of how quick and easy they are to style. Simply separate the hair down the middle and gather each section by the nape of the neck, braiding all the way to the end and securing with a small elastic. Use a product like Matrix Biolage Styling Pliable Paste Matte Texturizer ($18) to give grip and hold to the braid. (Photo via Frederick M. Brown/Getty)

Holly Taylor

You can never go wrong with a cool-girl fishtail braid, as Holly Taylor proves. “Start by sweeping all the hair to one side at the nape of the neck, then form a ponytail and divide it into two equal parts,” says Star. “Next take a small amount of hair from the outside of one section and incorporate it into the other section and do the same thing from one section to the other, working your way down to the end of the hair and securing it with a tie.” Use a little bit of Matrix Biolage Freeze Fix Humidity Resistant Hairspray ($12) to hold the braid, and don’t worry about any front sections that may not fit into the braid; you can leave them out to flow naturally. Jennifer Hudson

Leave it to J Hud to give us all the #hairgoals. To pull off her style, Star advises backcombing the top crown section and, once you have a little bit of volume, sweep the hair to one side and create a dutch braid. Then, to get that relaxed vibe, try pinching both sides of the braid and gently loosening. (Photo via Frazer Harrison/Getty)

Freida Pinto

The halo braid is romantic and elegant, so when you’re going for that effect, pull a Freida. “To get her look, scrunch dry your hair using the PRO Beauty Tools Ionic Dryer and a thickening mousse, then start a cornrow braid behind the ear on one side and work it all around the perimeter of the head,” explains celeb stylist Johnny Lavoy. Once you reach your starting point, braid the remaining hair and tuck it into the initial braid, securing with hairpins. “Since the trick to braids like these is to not have them tight and perfect, pull out some of the hair around the face for softness and texture,” he adds. Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi’s beaded braids are calling our name this spring, but before dividing your hair into sections to start the mini three-strand braids, prep it with a leave-in shine serum, according to celebrity hairstylist Laurie Heaps. “I like Ouai Hair Oil to smooth frizz and seal split ends for a high-gloss, super-smooth finish,” she says. Lady Gaga

It was the braid that broke the internet at this year’s Grammys, so obviously you need to cop it this season. “The contrast between Gaga’s hair color and the black corset-like threading makes this look even edgier,” says Heaps, but to re-create it you’re going to need a pro (or your BFF) for an extra hand. “For a simpler version (that still has wow factor), try weaving thin black ribbons into double fishtails for a signature style that’s all your own, and seal the look with BioSilk Silk Therapy Finishing Spray Firm Hold ($20) for staying power with shine,” she adds.
