Timeless and sophisticated.

There is simply nothing more timeless than elegance. Which is why it comes as no surprise that the "Old Money" aesthetic has gained explosive virality on both the red carpet and social media over the last few years.

"The old money aesthetic alludes to classic quiet luxury. It’s not flashy, but refined and elegant. The old money look gives a sense of wealth and heritage," hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein explains. "When a client requests an old money look I know she wants to look glossy, timeless, refined, put together, and polished."

Shiny, expensive-looking hair truly transcends time. Pinterest boards and TikTok slideshows embodying the trend spotlight fashion icons over the decades from the '20s flapper girl to Marilyn Monroe and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Then, of course, there are the style stars of today who are ushering in the new era of understated sophistication, including Sofia Richie Grainge, Margot Robbie, and Kaia Gerber.

Arguably the best part of the trend is that the old money look can be achieved with a variety of cuts, colors, styles, and textures—from a wavy brunette bob to bouncy highlighted curls and a soft blonde chignon. What connects the varying styles is that they ooze confidence; they're luxurious, but effortless.

"Old money hair is known for its clean, sleek styles like smooth blowouts, brushed-out waves, or simple low buns. Colors lean toward natural and rich tones, like deep brunettes, golden blondes, and warm chestnuts, with glossy finishes and that luxurious Hollywood shine," hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos says. "Accessories that are perfect for this look include silk ribbons, thin headbands, or tortoiseshell clips, which add a sprinkle of sophistication and don’t draw too much attention."

He continues: "Center parts and glossy finishes give off major sophistication, while the brushed-out waves and slightly undone textures add approachable elegance."

To Rubenstein, regardless of your locks' shade or up-do, the most important part is investing in hair health. To her, the cornerstone of Old Money hair is strong, shiny strands. For that, she relies on Nutrire products, which makes shampoo and conditioner suited for different scalp types and hair needs.

Sleek Low Bun

Carolyn Bassette Kennedy might as well be the Old Money poster child. The fashion and beauty icon often styled her golden locks in some sort of bun to achieve a clean, soft look. Here, she added easy dimension and intrigue with a combed-over side part.

Old Hollywood Bob

Zendaya made her auburn bob look so regal with soft, bouncy curls. It was the ultimate Old Hollywood cherry on top, paired with her grand tangerine-colored ball gown, tourmaline-and-diamond necklace, and east-west engagement ring.

Faux Headband

If you've heard of the quiet luxury trend, you've undoubtedly heard of Sofia Richie Grainge. The model loves a sleek, glossy look. Here, she styled her blonde-highlighted locks down and pin-straight, with the front pieces sleek and tucked behind her ears, giving the illusion of a headband.

Keke Palmer modernized the old money look with a rich shade of copper with a sleek blonde money piece. While the hair coloring is on the bolder side, her hair maintains a gorgeous shine and blown-out volume that are key to the aesthetic.

Tortoise Headband

Headbands are a reliable way to achieve a polished, preppy look—and keep your hair out of your face. Plus, patterns like tortoiseshell take the sophistication up an extra notch without being loud.

Slicked-Back Bun

While Grainge loves to let her hair down, her go-to look is the slicked-back bun. She has mastered the style: parting her hair down the middle with precision, pulling it back on an angle, and neatly gelling her strands right against her head.

Bouncy Blowout

Talk about va-va-voom volume. Cindy Crawford's signature supermodel blowout makes her hair look healthy, shiny, and bouncy. It exudes confidence without being flashy.

Voluminous Pin Back

Dianna Agron's lovely, doll-like up-do has a lot of moving parts but comes together cohesively for a playful, glamorous moment. The side part offers a contoured look with lots of body, especially when coupled with perfect spiral curls, while the half-up portion up the ante on the allure.

Long Vintage Waves

Lily Collins's vintage waves were classic Hollywood in the front, party in the back. Tucking her rich brunette locks behind her ears allowed for the vampy lip and diamond earrings to shine.

Side-Parted Lob

Zendaya's Challengers press tour gave way to many country club-chic looks, including these loose, medium-length curls. The actress's honey-blonde curls gleamed in the light, each tendril catching golden rays of sun. Her deep side part added elegance without trying too hard.

Effortless Chignon

Old Money hairstyles don't necessarily need a lot of effort. A simple low bun with all of your hair pulled back can give way to a refined appearance. In Kennedy's case, her chignon has a classic air about it, which works in tandem with her timeless pearl studs and red lip.

Structured Waves

The side-part strikes again, and this time with a subtle wave in the front of Selena Gomez's face that is beautifully contrasted with her hair tuck.

Flippy Bob

Polished Bouffant

Taking after her mom, Kaia Gerber's bouffant calls back to Crawford's runway days. Gerber, however, made the look her own with a gravity-defying structure.

Half-Up, Half-Down

Slicking back your hair doesn't mean you have to lose all volume. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's sleek half-up 'do is perfect for when you want to let some of your hair lose but don't want it in your face.

Pushed Back With Lots of Body

In a real Blair Waldorf meets Bridget Bardot moment, Zendaya enjoyed the best of both worlds: slicked-back bangs using a headband and a to-the-sky-volume beehive.
