Why balayage works for summer

Balayage has become known for its effortless appearance and low-maintenance upkeep.

“Most often, it delivers a sun-kissed look that pairs well with the summer season,” says colorist and balayage specialist Min Kim.

She explains that the technique mimics how hair naturally lightens in the sun, creating a soft, blended effect that doesn’t require frequent touch-ups. Achieving the look isn’t easy and requires a skilled colorist. Placement is everything. After all the goal is to add dimension, brightness and movement with color alone. However, once you’ve left the salon, the work to maintain your new shade is pretty straightforward. Color-preserving products like toning shampoos and hair masks are essential for cleansing and hydrating your hair without stripping it of its color—while vitamin-rich conditioners will ensure your strands stay healthy all season.

Balayage looks to try this summer

Mushroom brunette

Soft hair colors are trending, and this mushroom shade is proof. “This summer, everyone’s asking for mushroom brunette balayage with cool, ashy ribbons running throughout the hair,” says celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos. He explains that glossing is key to getting the full effect. “I always recommend using conditioning products, like Elvive 8 Second Wonder Water Lamellar Hair Treatment ($12), to keep the hair glassy and healthy between appointments.”

Caramel gloss

Refreshing your brunette for summer is all about emphasizing the dimension and warmth of the shade. According to Giannetos, a caramel gloss is the best way to brighten without lightening the hair. By keeping the base dark and diffusing the color at the root, you can focus the brightness around the face for an illuminating effect.

Sandy Beige

“This summer, there’s a shift toward sandy beige blondes that instantly brighten the complexion,” says Kim. Unlike golden or buttery blondes, this sandy hue blends cool and warm tones for a more natural-looking color.

Sun-kissed blonde

Summer begs for sun-kissed shades like this stunning blonde hue. “This balayage style brightens and refreshes without the harsh upkeep of traditional highlights,” says Giannetos. Even better? It grows out softly and has a natural beachy look that is ideal for the season.

Face-framing color

Face framing balayage can instantly refresh your look. However, nailing this look is all about placement. “The color should be brighter around the face while maintaining depth throughout the interior for dimension and longevity,” says Kim. Her pro tip for getting it right? Strategic saturation. “To achieve a seamless blend the colorist should have tension control while painting to customize the placement.”

Buttery caramel

If you are looking for a fresher take on butter blonde, consider this creamy caramel shade. It’s rich and dimensional, thanks to light-catching colors. “This look depends on the ribbon-like highlights that run from the middle to the tips of the hair,” says Kim. Light blonde shades require more protection agains daily stressors. For weekly nourishment, she recommends the Vitamino Color 10-in-1 Spray ($36) to hydrate, strengthen and protects against heat styling and UV exposure.
