Continuous overlapping of permanent hair color can impede the coloring process. Were you aware that colour buildup can cause brunettes to have dull hair? Color buildup occurs when permanent color is repeatedly applied to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair, causing it to accumulate and stack up on the hair shaft. This prevents the color process from functioning properly, and even though the color may appear to fade over time, the pigment remains, leaving the hair looking flat, unhealthy, and brittle.
To avoid this, I suggest only touching up regrowth with permanent color and using a demi-permanent gloss overlay for the mid-lengths and ends. If you want to detox and clarify your hair, I recommend booking a color removal service with your stylist to get rid of the buildup.
