The Top 6 Hair Color Trends to Try in 2022

2020 pushed us to experiment with hair color. And in 2021, that exploration continued. We either dialed things back with warmer tones or indulged in this year’s most popular shade: red. Some of us even tried more of the moment trends like peekaboo highlights and skunk hair.

And with the new year approaching, we’re glad we have an array of options to look forward to trying next. From platinum blonde to rich chocolate, here are the six biggest hair color trends to expect in 2022.

1. Butterfly Platinum

As Miley Cyrus, Jamie King and Billie Eilish have shown us, blondes still have more fun. Only there’s one big update to the classic shade in 2022. “Platinum used to only be for cool-toned blondes, but now you can wear the color in buttery tones as well,” shares Laura Gibson, a hair colorist and artistic director for RUSK. “It’s perfect for people who want to make a statement, but still air on the side of professionalism.” However, be prepared to keep a purple shampoo on hand to maintain the cool tone and you might have to book a few appointments to get the vibrant color just right (especially for any natural brunettes out there).

2. Brighter Babylights

Y2K beauty trends were everywhere in 2021, so it’s no surprise they’ll continue into the new year. One trend in particular? Brighter babylights. “Babylights are finely woven highlights that add subtle dimension to your hair and are perfect for toning the hair to a golden shade that’s more natural looking,” says Rubyna Kim, a hairstylist and colorist at Style Seat. “I recommend getting darker golden or caramel highlights, as they are more subtle but still vibrant and less damaging on your hair.” Simply put: This color trend is great for when you want a subtle change. As Kim adds, it’s all about adding shine and warmth in the new year.

3. Bronde

We knew when we saw this warm hue on celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Lily Aldridge earlier this year it would only get more popular. “Ombré is a trend that has shown to have staying power. So many of my clients are rocking ombré and are requesting subtle tweaks to make it feel fresher for the new year,” states Tracey Cunningham, a celebrity hair colorist in Los Angeles. A new update means making it look even more natural and thus, longer-lasting by focusing the color primarily on the ends, while bringing dimension to any hair tone.

4. Auburn

We’re slowly seeing more variations of brown tones come into play—including this year’s reigning color (aka red). “Auburn hair is perfect for achieving a rich chocolate brown with an undertone of copper or cherry for added radiance and richness,” says Kim. “This color is very sexy and seductive. Plus, warmer shades require less maintenance because of the underlying natural pigment, making it a more affordable change.”

5. 'Ice Cube' Blonde

There’s blonde, and there’s blonde.“‘Ice Cube’ blonde is going to be big next year, especially in the winter, as the cool tones match the cooler weather and looks great around the hairline and part,” expresses Cunningham. While it requires a lot of maintenance, the results are worth the multiple trips to the salon. It’s bold, dramatic and offers a modern take on being a silver fox in 2022.

6. Rich Chocolate.

“These natural colors are all about embracing a more realistic version of yourself,” says Clayton Hawkins, celebrity hair stylist and Tangle Teezer brand ambassador. “We’re going into next year wanting our hair to be less artificial, more luxe and organic,” he adds. From deep chocolate shades to honey hues, the variety of brown shades are having a moment. If your hair is already dark, consider a hair gloss, a treatment that adds shine and enhances your natural tone. But, if you have blonde or lightened hair, Hawkins recommends low lights or a dark toned wash.
